When moisture from the ground travels up through the wall by means of capillary action, this is usually due to a non-effective damp proof course, which has failed or broken down over time.

If you are having problems related to damp in your home, it is important that you read the symptoms correctly. There are a number of causes of damp, but the most serious underlying one is rising damp.

Rising is cause when moisture from the ground rises up the wall brickwork and plasterwork by capillary action. In some cases rising damp can rise near to 1.5mtrs high.

Once this happens the moisture affects the plaster and existing woodwork, such as skirting’s doorframes etc.

As ground moisture contains dissolved salts, when the waters evaporates these are left behind in the wall and on its surface.

These Salts are as below;

Sulphates These appear as a floury powdery crust on the surface. Nitrates & chlorides These hygroscopic salts absorb moisture from the atmosphere. Unless these salts are removed the problem will not be cured as they continue to draw moisture in.

Signs to look out for Rising Damp

Stains/tidemarks on walls. Salts
Damp or wet patches on walls.
Bubbling/flaky paint.
Decaying skirting boards.
